Deck builder Jake Mathias of Great Big Decks in Barrie, Ontario, likes to go the extra mile to make his customers happy. Three years of deck building convinced him that no other composite decking board compares to premium Trex Transcend®.
“It’s my personal preference,” he said, noting the beauty of Transcend’s grain patterns, color options, performance and ease of use. “There aren’t many (composites) that offer the look of stained wood like Transcend.”
Mathias builds about 12 Trex decks a year, both big and small. Recently, a homeowner made a simple request - to replace a battered concrete front stoop and walkway with four stairs and an upper platform that would host a bistro set. The end result shows what a touch of creativity can achieve in a small space.
Mathias created a 21x14 curved gem featuring Transcend Spiced Rum, lighting and alternate board placement that wins raves by passersby and the homeowner. “I said I wanted a showpiece,” said Arden Spicer of Ontario. “I didn’t know what to expect; I was joyous when I saw it.”
In addition to the peaceful feeling her entry area evokes, Ms. Arden said she is especially pleased with its durability. “It will probably withstand a tornado; the house will be gone, but the front porch will still be there,” she laughed.
Mathias agreed. The easy maintenance requirements, long-lasting durability of Trex® decking and the fact that Trex doesn’t swell, shrink or splinter like wood are important to the deck builder whose clients deal with snow nearly half the year.
“Trex is a like a diamond,” he said. “Trex is forever.”
